Can You Really Buy 1GB of Data for ₦249 in Nigeria? We Tested Every Claim

The Skepticism Is Understandable

When someone tells you that you can buy 1GB of MTN data for ₦415 instead of ₦700, your first reaction should be suspicion. That is a 40% discount. In Nigeria. Where things that sound too good to be true usually involve someone sending you a DM that starts with "Dear esteemed customer."

So we ran a test. We bought 1GB of MTN data at ₦415 from Vtyield (both the website at vtyield.com/guest/data and the WhatsApp bot at +234 808 160 4456). Then we bought 1GB at ₦700 from a bank app. Then we compared them side by side on the same phone, in the same location, on the same day.

Here is what we found.

Test 1: Does the Data Actually Arrive?

₦415 purchase (Vtyield): We sent "Data" to the Vtyield WhatsApp bot, selected MTN, chose the 1GB plan at ₦415, entered our test phone number, and confirmed with our PIN. The bot responded "Success! Your MTN line has been credited with 1GB" after 8 seconds.

We checked the balance: dial 1314#. The SMS confirmed 1,024MB had been credited. Validity: 30 days.

₦700 purchase (bank app): We opened a bank app, navigated to Data, selected MTN, entered the same phone number, selected 1GB, paid ₦700, and waited. The confirmation came after 14 seconds.

Balance check: 1314#. Confirmed 1,024MB credited. Validity: 30 days.

Result: Both delivered exactly 1,024MB with 30-day validity. The data arrived. It was real. It was the same amount.

Test 2: Is the Speed the Same?

We ran speed tests using the Speedtest by Ookla app, alternating between the SME data (₦415) and the retail data (₦700). Same phone. Same SIM. Same location (Ikeja, Lagos). Same time of day.

TestSME Data (₦415)Retail Data (₦700)
Download speed (average of 5 tests)28.4 Mbps29.1 Mbps
Upload speed (average of 5 tests)8.7 Mbps9.2 Mbps
Ping (average of 5 tests)34ms32ms
The difference is within normal network variation. On a different day or at a different time, the SME data might test faster than retail. The speeds are statistically identical because they use the same MTN infrastructure. There is no "slow lane" for SME data.

Test 3: Does It Work for Everything?

We tested the SME data on:

  • YouTube (streamed 45 minutes at 480p): Worked normally

  • Instagram (scrolled feed, watched stories, posted a reel): Worked normally

  • WhatsApp (voice call, video call, sent photos): Worked normally

  • Google Chrome (browsed 30 web pages): Worked normally

  • Zoom (30-minute video call): Worked normally

  • Netflix (downloaded a 45-minute episode): Worked normally

  • TikTok (20 minutes of scrolling): Worked normally

  • Spotify (1 hour of streaming): Worked normally
  • We could not find a single app or service that behaved differently on SME data vs retail data. They are functionally identical.

Test 4: Does It Really Last 30 Days?

We activated the SME 1GB plan on August 5th. On September 3rd (29 days later), we still had 147MB remaining. We used it normally (not conservatively, not aggressively). The plan expired on September 4th (30 days after activation).

The validity claim checks out. 30 days means 30 days.

    So Why Is It Cheaper?

This is the question everyone asks. If the data is the same speed, same validity, and works on the same apps, why does it cost 40% less?

The answer is wholesale pricing tiers.

MTN (and every other network) sells data at different price points to different customers:

    TierWho Gets ItPrice per GB
RetailEnd users buying directly from MTN or through bank apps₦700
CorporateCompanies buying in bulk for employees₦400-500
SMERegistered resellers who sell data to end users₦410-415
When you buy from a bank app, the bank is not a data reseller. It is a payment channel. It charges you the retail price (₦700) and takes a commission from MTN. You pay full price, the bank gets a cut, and MTN gets the rest.

When you buy from Vtyield, you are buying SME data. Vtyield is a registered reseller with direct wholesale access to all four networks. The data is purchased in bulk at wholesale rates and sold to you at a small markup above wholesale. That markup is Vtyield's revenue. Your price is ₦415 instead of ₦700.

The data itself is identical. The bytes are the same bytes. The routing is the same routing. The only difference is the business relationship between the seller and the network.

The Catch (Because There Is Always a Catch)

There are two minor differences between SME and retail data:

    1. You cannot migrate SME data to a different plan. If you buy 1GB SME and decide you want to change it to a different bundle, you cannot. With retail data, some networks let you swap plans. In practice, almost nobody does this, so it rarely matters.

    2. Some SME plans do not show on the network's own balance check app. If you use the myMTN app to check your data balance, SME data sometimes appears as "gifted data" or "bonus data" instead of a named plan. The data still works identically. It just has a different label in the app. Checking via USSD (1314#) always shows the correct balance.

Neither of these differences affects how the data performs.

    The Math for a Year

    Purchase Method1GB/month Cost5GB/month CostAnnual Cost (5GB/mo)
    Retail (bank app)₦700₦3,500₦42,000
    SME (Vtyield)₦415₦2,075₦24,900
    You Save₦285₦1,425₦17,100
₦17,100 per year. For one person. For a family of four, multiply by four: ₦68,400 saved per year by switching from retail to SME data.

That is not a marginal saving. That is a new phone. That is a family trip. That is 6 months of electricity for a small apartment.
