Cheapest Data Plans for Nigerian Students in 2026: Under ₦1,000, Under ₦2,000, Under ₦5,000

₦5,000 for 10GB Is Not Cheap. ₦4,100 for 10GB Is.

The data market in Nigeria in 2026 is bizarre. MTN says 10GB costs ₦5,000. Airtel says 10GB is ₦4,000. But on the right VTU platform, that same 10GB — delivered directly to your MTN or Airtel number — costs ₦4,100 (for MTN) or ₦2,940 (for Airtel).

This is not a scam. It's SME data. And students who know about it are paying meaningfully less for their monthly data budget than those who don't.

Under ₦500: Survival Data

Under ₦1,000: The Weekly Budget

The SME advantage is clearest here. MTN 2GB for ₦820 instead of ₦1,000 means you get more for your money.

Under ₦3,000: The Monthly Budget

At this budget level, 5GB from MTN via SME channel for ₦2,050 is a strong single value.

Under ₦5,000: The "I Have Exams Coming" Budget

₦4,100 for 10GB of MTN data via SME — that is ₦410/GB. Buying the same data directly from MTN: ₦500/GB. Savings: 18%.

Which Network is Best for Students in 2026?

MTN has the widest coverage including smaller state capitals and rural campuses.

Airtel is strongest in Lagos, Abuja, and major southern cities. 4G speeds are often faster in urban areas.

Glo offers the best value data plans direct (outside SME) but 4G coverage is inconsistent.

9mobile has the poorest overall coverage in 2026.
