How to Buy Airtime or Data for Someone Else's Number in Nigeria (Any Network)
Need to top up your mum's phone, send airtime to a friend, or recharge a different number than yours? Here is the complete guide to buying airtime and data for any Nigerian number — MTN, Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile — without complications.
You Don't Have to Be the Recipient
You can absolutely buy airtime or data for any phone number, not just your own. You enter their number, you pay, they receive the credit. The confusion usually comes from older methods — USSD recharge codes that required the sender's own network, or bank apps that default to your registered number.
Method 1: VTU Platform (Fastest, Any Network to Any Number)
1. Go to vtyield.com/guest/airtime for airtime or vtyield.com/guest/data for data
2. Select the recipient's network (not yours)
3. Enter the recipient's phone number
4. Select amount/bundle
5. Pay
6. The credit goes to the recipient's number immediately
You don't need an account. You don't need to be on the same network. Your MTN number can top up an Airtel number — completely cross-network.
Method 2: Network USSD Gifting Codes
All four major networks have official USSD codes for sending airtime to another number. These work on basic phones.
MTN Share and Sell
Dial 600recipient_numberamountPIN#Airtel Me2U
Dial 432recipient_number*amount#Glo Easy Share
Dial 131recipient_numberamountPIN#9mobile Share
Dial 223PINrecipient_numberamount#The limitation: All network codes are same-network only. For cross-network top-ups, Method 1 is your only option.
Method 3: Bank App
Most bank apps allow airtime recharge for any number:
Bank apps work for direct network airtime at standard price. For SME data or bundled data plans, a VTU platform is the better choice.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Entering your own number by mistake. Triple-check the number before paying. Most platforms do not allow refunds for airtime sent to the wrong number.
Forgetting the network selection. Airtel data sent to an MTN number will fail. Always match the selected network to the recipient's actual SIM network.
Wrong bundle type. SME data is not compatible with a SIM that has never had data activated. When in doubt, buy direct network data.
Sending as a Regular Gift
A common use case: parents buying data for their children at university. You can set up a recurring purchase on Vtyield (with an account) to auto-recharge a specific number every week or month — the digital equivalent of "I'll credit your account before month end," except it actually happens automatically.
