How to Spot Fake WhatsApp Forward Chains (and Stop Them From Spreading)

The Classic Red Flags

1. Bold, all‑caps headlines – "BREAKING NEWS!" "URGENT!!" – real news rarely screams like that.
2. Requests for money or personal info – a message saying "send ₦5,000 to help the family" is almost always a scam.
3. Poor grammar & spelling – you’ll see "prayer" instead of "prayer", "your" instead of "you’re".
4. Link shorteners – bit.ly, tinyurl – they hide the real destination. Hover before you click.
5. Threats or fear‑mongering – "If you don’t share this, you’ll lose your job" – that’s a pressure tactic.

Why It Matters in Nigeria

WhatsApp is the most popular messenger here. A viral chain can reach thousands in minutes, especially during election periods or when a new disease spreads. A single false claim can cause panic, fuel scams, or even affect market prices.
