Night Data Plans in Nigeria 2026: The Complete Guide to Cheap Late-Night Browsing

The Night Owl Economy

It is 11:30 PM. The generator is running (or maybe you are on Band A and the grid is actually working). Everyone else in the house is asleep. And you have a 2GB download waiting, a series to stream, or an assignment to research.

Day data is expensive. Night data is not.

Nigerian networks offer special data plans that only work between certain hours (usually 11 PM to 6 AM). They cost a fraction of regular data. And if you are the kind of person who does most of their heavy internet usage at night, which is a lot of Nigerians, they can save you thousands of naira per month.

Here is every night plan available in 2026.

MTN Night Plans (Pulse Nightlife)

Requirement: You must be on the MTN Pulse tariff plan. To migrate, dial *406#. Migration is free.

PlanPriceDataValid HoursActivation Code
Night 500MB₦75500MB11 PM - 6 AM3124# then select Night
Night 1GB₦1501GB11 PM - 6 AM3124# then select Night
Important details:
  • You can subscribe multiple times per night. Buy the 500MB plan four times and you get 2GB for ₦300. That is cheaper than any day plan.
  • The data expires at 6 AM sharp. Whatever you did not use is gone. No rollover.
  • Downloads in progress at 5:59 AM will continue until the connection drops, but new connections after 6 AM will use your regular data.
  • Activation tip: Subscribe at exactly 11:00 PM to get the full 7-hour window. Some people subscribe at 2 AM and only get 4 hours. That is still enough for most tasks, but why leave hours on the table?

    Airtel Night Plans (SmartTRYBE)

Requirement: You must be on the SmartTRYBE tariff. To migrate, dial *312# and select the migration option. Or text JOIN to 8185.

    PlanPriceDataValid HoursActivation Code
Night 1GB₦1001GB11 PM - 6 AM*312# then select Night Bundle
Night 1.5GB₦1501.5GB11 PM - 6 AM*312# then select Night Bundle
Airtel's night plans are slightly cheaper per GB than MTN. 1GB for ₦100 is genuinely hard to beat.

    Glo Night Plans

Requirement: No special tariff plan required. Available to all Glo users.

    PlanPriceDataValid HoursActivation Code
    Night 1GB₦1001GB12 AM - 5 AM*312# then select Night
Note: Glo's night window is shorter: midnight to 5 AM, not 11 PM to 6 AM. You get 5 hours instead of 7. Plan your downloads accordingly.

    9mobile Night Plans

Requirement: No special tariff plan required.

    PlanPriceDataValid HoursActivation Code
    Night 500MB₦50500MB12 AM - 5 AM2293*12#
    Night 1GB₦1001GB12 AM - 5 AM2293*11#
9mobile offers the cheapest night data in Nigeria. 500MB for ₦50 is almost free. If you are in a 9mobile coverage area and you do your browsing at night, this is hard to argue with.

    Quick Comparison

    NetworkBest Night PlanPrice per GBHours
    MTN Pulse500MB x 2₦150/GB11 PM - 6 AM
    Airtel SmartTRYBE1GB₦100/GB11 PM - 6 AM
    Glo1GB₦100/GB12 AM - 5 AM
    9mobile1GB₦100/GB12 AM - 5 AM
Airtel and 9mobile tie for cheapest. MTN is slightly more expensive but has the longest window and the most consistent speeds at night.

What Night Data Is Good For

Night data works best for tasks that involve large downloads and do not require real-time interaction:

    1. Downloading movies and series (Netflix, Prime Video, and YouTube all support offline downloads)
    2. App updates (turn on "Download over any network" and let them run overnight)
    3. OS updates (Android and iOS updates can be 500MB-2GB)
    4. Downloading study materials (PDF textbooks, lecture recordings)
    5. Cloud backups (Google Photos, iCloud, WhatsApp backup)
    6. Torrents (we are not judging, but use a VPN)

Night data is not ideal for:

  • Video calls (Zoom, Google Meet) at 3 AM when the other person is asleep

  • Live streaming (your viewers are also asleep)

  • Online gaming (you could, but your reflexes at 2 AM are probably not competitive-grade)
  • The Math: Night Data vs SME Data vs Retail Data

Let us say you use 10GB per month. Here is what it costs on each plan type:

    MethodCost for 10GB/monthAnnual Cost
    Retail data (bank app)₦10,000₦120,000
    SME data (Vtyield)₦4,100₦49,200
    Night data (Airtel)₦1,000₦12,000
Night data wins on price. But there is a catch: you can only use it between 11 PM and 6 AM. If you need data during the day too (and you do), you need a hybrid approach:

    The optimal strategy:
    1. Buy 3-5GB of SME data for daytime use on vtyield.com/guest/data (₦1,230-2,050)
    2. Subscribe to night data for your heavy downloading (₦100-300/night)
    3. Total monthly spend: ₦1,330-2,350 for 10-15GB of effective usage

Compare that to ₦10,000 for 10GB on a bank app. You just saved ₦7,650-8,670 per month by splitting your data between day (SME) and night (night plans).

Over a year, that is ₦91,800-104,040 saved. That is a decent phone. Or 130 shawarmas. Your priorities.

How to Set Up Your Phone for Night Downloads

Before you go to sleep, queue up your downloads:

    On Android:

    1. Open YouTube, tap the download button on the videos you want 2. Open Netflix/Prime, download episodes for offline viewing 3. Go to Settings, System, Software Update, and tap "Download" 4. Open Google Play Store, tap your profile, Manage apps, and update all

    On iPhone:

    1. Same process for YouTube, Netflix, and Prime Video 2. Settings, General, Software Update, Download and Install 3. App Store, tap your profile, Update All

Set your alarm for 5:45 AM. When it goes off, check that your downloads completed. Then go back to sleep knowing you just got 1GB of content for the price of a sachet of pure water.

    One More Thing

If you are a student reading this at midnight in your hostel, trying to figure out whether the MTN night plan will cover your assignment research: yes, it will. 500MB is enough for approximately 4-5 hours of web browsing, 200+ web pages, or 50+ PDF downloads.

Subscribe. Do your research. Submit your assignment. Sleep.

The night is cheap. Use it.
