USSD Fees and Limits

Every USSD session costs a network fee — currently ₦6.98 per session on most networks (this is deducted from your airtime balance, not your data). This fee applies even if the transaction fails or times out, which is one of the more annoying aspects of USSD banking in Nigeria.

Daily USSD transfer limits vary by bank and account tier:

  • Tier 1 accounts: ₦50,000/day

  • Tier 2 accounts: ₦200,000/day

  • Tier 3 accounts: ₦5,000,000/day (though most banks cap USSD at ₦200,000–₦500,000 regardless)
  • When USSD Fails (And It Will)

USSD codes fail for several reasons:

  • Network congestion during peak hours (lunch, evenings, salary week)

  • Session timeout — you have approximately 30–60 seconds to complete the entire flow, and if your network lags, you will run out

  • Wrong PIN three times = temporary block. Call your bank to reset.
  • When USSD fails, the fastest alternative for buying airtime, data, or paying bills is a guest checkout via vtyield.com — no login, no app, just a browser and a bank transfer.
