Palmpay Account Frozen or Restricted? Here Is What's Happening and Exactly What to Do
Palmpay restricted your account and you can't send money or access your balance? This guide explains the exact reasons accounts get frozen, the fastest resolution path, and — critically — how to access your funds while you wait.
"Your Account Has Been Restricted" Is One of the Most Terrifying Fintech Sentences
You open Palmpay at 9 AM to send money and you're hit with a banner: "Your account has been temporarily restricted." Your balance is there — sitting there — but you cannot touch it.
Calm down. This is almost certainly a compliance hold, not fraud, and it resolves. But you need to do the right things in the right order.
Why Palmpay Restricts Accounts
Palmpay is licensed by the CBN and must comply with AML (Anti-Money Laundering) and KYC (Know Your Customer) regulations. Accounts get restricted for specific, rule-based reasons:
1. Failed or pending KYC verification
If you signed up without completing BVN verification, or your verification was flagged, Palmpay may restrict transactions above a certain tier.
2. Suspicious transaction patterns
Receiving multiple large transfers from different unknown senders in a short window triggers an automated fraud hold. This affects innocent users and actual fraudsters — the algorithm doesn't distinguish.
3. Third-party complaint
If someone reported your account as involved in a fraudulent transaction, Palmpay places a hold pending investigation.
4. NIN/BVN mismatch
Discrepancies in your personal information between NIN and BVN can trigger a restriction.
5. Regulatory directive
In rare cases, CBN or EFCC may instruct Palmpay to freeze specific accounts as part of investigations.
The Resolution Path
Step 1: Identify the exact restriction type
Read the restriction message carefully:
Step 2: Check your notification and email history
Palmpay often sends a notification or email before restricting accounts. Check your registered email's inbox and spam folder for anything from palmpay.com.
Step 3: Complete KYC if prompted
Go to Profile → Account Verification → submit BVN, NIN, and any additional document requested. Processing takes 1–48 hours.
Step 4: Contact Palmpay support directly
Step 5: Escalate to CBN if unresolved in 5 business days
File a complaint at consumerportal.cbn.gov.ng → "Complaint against a fintech/payment service provider." CBN consumer protection has a 48-hour response mandate for licensed institutions.
While Your Account Is Restricted: Alternatives
What NOT to Do
Do not send funds to a third party to "forward" them. Multiple Nigerians have lost money to scammers claiming they can "unlock" frozen fintech accounts. This is 100% a scam.
Do not create a new account to bypass the restriction. This violates Palmpay's terms and can result in both accounts being permanently closed.
Your money is safe. The restriction is procedural. Follow the steps above and it will resolve.
