How to Pay Your Electricity Bill Online in Nigeria Without a Bank App (3 Methods That Work)

The Bank App Is Down at the Exact Moment You Need Power

This sentence should not be surprising to any Nigerian. The bank app fails on Friday evenings, on public holidays, during storms, and — with disturbing precision — when your prepaid meter is about to hit zero and your generator fuel is low.

Here are three methods to buy electricity tokens when your bank app is not cooperating.

Method 1: USSD (Works on Any Phone, Any Network)

Every Nigerian bank has a USSD code for transfers. To buy electricity via USSD:

1. Dial your bank's USSD transfer code
2. Transfer money to the VTU platform's payment account
3. The transaction completes automatically when money lands

BankTransfer USSD Code
GTBank7371AmountAccountNumber#
Access Bank901Amount*AccountNumber#
First Bank894Amount*AccountNumber#
Zenith Bank966Amount*AccountNumber#
UBA9193AmountAccountNumber#
On Vtyield: after initiating a purchase as a guest, the checkout screen shows you a dedicated virtual account number for that specific transaction. Transfer the amount, and the transaction completes automatically.

Method 2: Open a Different App

The key insight: bank apps and fintech apps don't share infrastructure. When GTBank's app is down, OPay still works. When your bank's mobile banking is timing out, Kuda or Vtyield's web interface might be completely fine.

If your bank app is down:
1. Open Kuda, OPay, or Palmpay
2. Go to "Bills" → "Electricity"
3. Enter your meter number and amount
4. Pay from your fintech wallet

If your fintech wallet balance is zero, use USSD to transfer from your bank to the fintech account, then use the funded balance to buy the electricity token.

Method 3: Guest Checkout via Mobile Browser (No App Needed)

This is the cleanest path when you don't have accounts anywhere.

1. Open Chrome or Safari on your phone
2. Go to vtyield.com/guest/electricity
3. Enter your meter number (the 11-digit number on the meter)
4. Enter the amount you want to buy
5. Proceed to payment — choose bank transfer
6. You'll receive a unique virtual account number valid for 30 minutes
7. Transfer the exact amount via any USSD code
8. The token arrives via SMS and on-screen within 60 seconds

No account. No app download. No registration.

Emergency: Your Meter is at Zero and It's Late

If your meter just hit zero, most prepaid meters in Nigeria allow emergency credit:

  • Hexing/Conlog meters: Press "07" + Enter, then look for an emergency credit prompt

  • Landis+Gyr: Press and hold the "i" button for 5 seconds
  • Use the emergency credit window to complete the steps in Method 3. The whole process — from opening the browser to receiving the token — takes under 3 minutes on a working mobile connection.

    When All Else Fails

Every DISCO has physical offices and authorised agents in most LGAs. But driving to an agent at 10 PM is not the ideal solution. The methods above will get you a token faster, for cheaper, from your couch.
